The Border's Troubled Waters

It has been said the wars of the future will be waged for the control of water. On the Texas-Mexico border, certainly, tension over the distribution of shared water resources is rising. Complicating the facts that the region is both arid and experiencing rapid population growth is the binational dimension of the situation. While open conflict between the two countries is, fortunately, highly unlikely, soothing the border's troubled waters will be no easy task. In a two-part series beginning this month, borderlines examines U.S.-Mexico relations regarding border waters.

Debate Over Immigrant Health Care Heats Up in New Mexico

A developing trend toward limiting illegal immigrants' access to health services, particularly in Texas and New Mexico, has health care professionals and immigrant rights activists in those states worried. They argue that recent policies and legal interpretations threaten to deny often-crucial medical care to some of the most marginalized members of their communities. The issue has sparked a heated debate not just in New Mexico but across the country, pitting concerns with legal requirements and hospital finances against issues of community health and ethics.
